Through this blog post, get to know Durban, a vibrant city on South Africa’s east coast that truly offers something special for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re torn between a nature-filled safari getaway, a beach holiday, or an enriching cultural and historic city break, Durban blends all of these into one memorable destination.

We’ve narrowed it down to five amazing, easy-to-explore spots — not an easy choice when there’s so much to see and do, but here they are!

1. Durban Botanic Gardens.

Recognised as the oldest botanic garden in Africa, the Durban Botanic Gardens was established in 1849 and moved to its current site two years later.

Entrance is free, and the main paths are all paved and well-maintained, making it easy for wheelchair users to enjoy a day in relaxing surroundings and nature’s peace. Dogs and informal picnics are also permitted, and wheelchair accessible restrooms and parking spots are available.

It’s always lovely to find a calm and green environment inside a big city, so the Durban Botanic Gardens is well worth checking out. It features beautiful plant collections, shaded lawns, and a relaxed ambiance that can be enhanced earlier in the day, before high-sun hours.

2. Moses Mabhida Stadium

Completed in 2009 for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Moses Mabhida Stadium quickly became one of Durban’s most iconic landmarks. Named after Moses Mabhida, a prominent South African politician and anti-apartheid leader, it’s a must-see for sports fans and architecture lovers alike.

The stadium offers tours and facilities with wheelchair-friendly access. While the famous Sky Car is currently undergoing work to improve accessibility and is not operational, thrill-seekers without accessibility needs can try the Big Rush Big Swing, the world’s tallest stadium swing, sending you soaring 80 metres above the pitch! Do you think you would dare to try it?

3. The Golden Mile

A beautiful place to enjoy the sun, the warm waters, and a lively promenade, the Golden Mile is a wide stretch of beachfront where people can treat themselves to a relaxing day, with endless ocean views.

Lifeguards and shark nets provide added peace of mind, and the level-access promenade makes it easy to enjoy the coastline at your own pace. At some points along the Mile, visitors can enquire about beach wheelchairs for hire, which help navigate the sand and ensure everyone can enjoy both the beach and the water without worry.

The Golden Mile is an accessible, beautiful, and classic seaside experience — one that is certainly worthy of any traveler’s Durban itinerary!

5. City Hall, Durban Natural Science Museum, and Durban Art Gallery.

The Durban City Hall is a historic and imposing building, worth visiting for its beauty, but also because it houses two cultural institutions: the Durban Natural Science Museum with its dioramas of African wildlife, fossils, skeletons, and natural history exhibits; and the Durban Art Gallery that showcases South African art collections, temporary exhibits, and contemporary works reflecting the cultural diversity of the region.

The building functions as a compact and rewarding cultural hub, allowing visitors to explore both science and art in the same location.
